Celebrating the Legacy of Julia Morgan: Why Traditional Architecture Matters in Remodeling

Last Friday evening, we had the pleasure of attending the Julia Morgan Awards hosted by the Northern California Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA). The event brought together architects, designers, craftspeople, and preservation advocates who share a deep appreciation for timeless architecture and the enduring principles of classical design.

As members of the ICAA, the evening served as a reminder of why we are so passionate about the work we do. While many people think of remodeling as simply updating a home, we believe the best renovations do something far more meaningful: they honor a home's history while thoughtfully adapting it for modern living.

Learning From the Past

Julia Morgan remains one of California's most influential architects. Her work demonstrates a profound understanding of proportion, craftsmanship, materiality, and the relationship between a building and its surroundings. More than a century later, her buildings continue to feel relevant, beautiful, and deeply connected to the people who inhabit them.

The award-winning projects celebrated throughout the evening reflected these same values. Rather than chasing trends, they respected architectural heritage, preserved original details, and introduced contemporary conveniences in ways that felt seamless and authentic.

Why Architectural Respect Matters

In our work throughout Piedmont, Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco, we often encounter homes with remarkable architectural character. Whether it's a Colonial Revival, Tudor, Craftsman, Mediterranean, or Mid-Century residence, every home has a story to tell.

When remodeling these homes, our goal is never to erase their history. Instead, we seek to understand what made the original architecture special and build upon those strengths.

Respecting traditional architecture does not mean freezing a home in time. Families today live differently than they did decades ago. Kitchens have become gathering spaces, homeowners need dedicated work areas, and indoor-outdoor living has become increasingly important. Successful remodeling carefully balances these modern needs while preserving the architectural language that gives a home its identity.

Preserving Character While Improving Function

One of the most rewarding aspects of residential remodeling is finding solutions that feel as though they have always belonged.

This might mean removing walls to improve flow while maintaining original trim details, designing an addition that appears to have been part of the original structure, or selecting materials that complement a home's existing architectural vocabulary. When done thoughtfully, these interventions enhance both the functionality and long-term value of a property.

The result is a home that feels authentic rather than altered.

Timeless Design Creates Lasting Value

At Hanomoco Design, we often say that great design should be timeless, not trendy. The homes that continue to inspire us decades later are rarely the ones that followed the latest fashion. They are the homes built on strong architectural principles, quality craftsmanship, and thoughtful attention to detail.

The Julia Morgan Awards celebrate exactly these ideals. They remind us that preserving architectural heritage is not simply about protecting the past—it's about creating homes that will continue to inspire future generations.

Looking Forward

As we left the awards ceremony, we felt energized by the collective commitment to thoughtful design and preservation. The evening reinforced our belief that remodeling should be an act of stewardship as much as creativity.

Every home presents an opportunity to honor what came before while creating spaces that support modern life. When that balance is achieved, the result is something truly special: a home that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

At Hanomoco Design, we are proud to continue this tradition, helping homeowners reimagine their spaces while preserving the architectural character that makes them unique.
