Why Our Partnership is the Foundation of Every Project
"The design partnership has been wonderful. The combination of Dan and Charlotte brings together all the key components, (technical, operational/ project management, creative/design and creative problem solving) necessary to crafting and delivering a great renovation. The design process is efficient and well integrated with external partners, (contractors, city and subs). We love the final result - so glad that we listened to Charlotte's design suggestions. She knows how to pull together a stunning, cohesive design that blends perfectly with our home. Most importantly Dan and Charlotte are wonderful to work with." Piedmont Resident
After more than a decade working side by side, we’ve learned that a strong partnership can be one of the most powerful tools in design. At Hanomoco, our process thrives on two voices, two perspectives, and a shared belief that great design is both beautiful and buildable.
From the beginning, our collaboration has been shaped by what we each bring to the table. Dan’s deep background in construction, logistics, and feasibility grounds each project in what’s possible. Charlotte brings a strong point of view around materials, mood, and emotional connection. Together, we’ve built more than just a studio—we’ve built a rhythm.
Here’s a closer look at how our partnership plays out.

We enclosed the existing open porch in order to create interior access to the garage, with entry closet storage for the growing family. The curved metal roof of the atrium echos the one over the stair window.
Synergy: Two Perspectives, One Vision
We’ve never been interested in playing design tug-of-war. What makes our process effective is the way we balance and challenge each other.
In one recent remodel in Piedmont, Charlotte proposed a deep burgundy for a stair railing and millwork—something bold and moody that the client loved but weren’t sure could work structurally. Dan stepped in to coordinate with the painter and contractor, rerouting electrical placement and advising on stain versus paint application, ensuring the look didn’t just stay on paper—it came to life.
This kind of give-and-take happens constantly. One of us sketches a big move, the other figures out how to make it fly. It’s not about splitting the work; it’s about expanding what’s possible when both of us are fully engaged.
For our clients: it means you get a team who can toggle between big ideas and practical execution—without losing momentum or cohesion.
Collaboration: Turning Ideas into Impact
Clients rarely come to us with a perfect Pinterest board. More often, they come with a feeling—how they want to live, how they want their home to support them.
Charlotte is often the first to translate those feelings into visual language: color palettes, textures, layout concepts. Dan grounds those ideas in the realities of structure, lighting, code, and sequencing—turning inspiration into actionable design plans.
In a recent lower-level transformation, a client wanted their space to feel like “a retreat, but not precious.” Charlotte proposed a mix of earth-toned plasters and linen upholstery, while Dan reconfigured the basement layout to carve out a proper guest suite, wine niche, and utility zone. The result? A space that felt layered and luxurious and made better use of every square foot.
For our clients: you get design that’s as considered as it is creative. We don’t chase trends—we build spaces that work for how you live.
Trust: Why Our Team Works (So Yours Can, Too)
Let’s be honest—renovations can get complicated. Plans shift, costs fluctuate, and construction always brings surprises. That’s where trust becomes everything.
After years of working together (and weathering more than one curveball), we’ve developed an unspoken shorthand. Dan knows when to step in to solve a build issue before it becomes a delay. Charlotte knows when a design decision needs protecting. We’re aligned on the bigger picture—and that’s something our clients feel right away.
This internal trust sets the tone for how we lead projects—with clarity, calm, and a deep sense of responsibility. We also extend that same level of trust outward—to the craftspeople, architects, and builders who make the work real.
For our clients: it means fewer dropped balls, less back-and-forth, and a smoother experience from day one.

Stronger by Design
We often say Hanomoco is more than a design studio—it’s a creative partnership with structure behind it. Our work reflects that balance: grounded yet expressive, layered but clear. Design is never a solo act. It takes vision, follow-through, and trust to turn a house into a home that feels just right. We’re proud that every project we take on is backed by both of us, fully. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
